Joaquín Sorolla

portrait de J SorollaJoaquín Sorolla is a Spanish painter born in Valencia. Sorolla first studied in his hometown, then in Italy and Paris. He will be very influenced by the French Impressionists.

His best known works are among others: The other Margaret, who won the gold medal in Madrid and the return of the fishmen, which was admired at the Paris Salon. He won a great success and soon became the master of the modern school of Spanish painting.





Sorolla was really succesful with French lovers of art. An exhibition of his works at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1906 brought him even greater fame and brought him to become an officer of the Legion of Honor.

He died in 1923 in Madrid. After his death his wife donated many of his paintings to the Spanish State.
