The mayor of Valencia since July 5, 1991 is the strong feminine figure Rita Barbera.
Rita Barbera is the name of the economist and journalist from the People’s Party (PP), which was re-elected in 1995, 1999, 2003 and most recently in 2007 by the Valencian people. In 2003, she obtained an absolute majority and in the last election won 57.45% of the votes, winning in all areas of the city with an advantage of 10% each.
The political career of Rita Barbera:
- Co-promoter and co-founder of the Popular Party in Valencia May 8, 1983 and member of the Cortes Valenciana, the legislative body of the Generalitat Valenciana.
- Member of National Executive Committee of the Popular Party since February 1993.
- President of the FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) since November 1th, 1995 until the end of November 2003, when she became vice president.
- In 2008, she was the sixteenth president of the Congress of the People’s Party, and she celebrated it in her hometown of Valencia.
